The Calm Before the Storm (of Drinking)
by Eli Hodapp
As New Years Eve Eve, I did everything I could to make sure the day was as low key as possible. I got everything I needed to do for TouchArcade done nice and early, scheduled stories for the rest of the day, and spent some time at the gym. Following that, I came back home, hung out for a little bit, then headed off to Friday Night Magic.
Magic went pretty normal, I had great match ups most of the night, and wound up taking third. I actually probably would have been able to snag first, but I made a horrible play mistake in round two. I was playing a guy with a light control themed deck that I needed to beat on speed alone, as I didn’t have any answers to the things I knew he had in his deck once he stabilized around turn five.
I’m still playing Red Deck Wins, so beating slower control decks isn’t that big of a deal, provided they don’t have an entire hand full of counterspells. One threat I play that has a longer tail on it to do damage later in the game involves incrementing a counter each turn, and whenever I cast a red spell. I missed a single tick of that, which would have made the difference of me winning as I could have caused lethal damage on the turn before I lost.
Technically speaking I could have called a judge over, and replayed the game backwards based on lands in play and spells in our graveyard and they would have been forced into allowing me to add the counter I missed, but doing that stuff always seems super douchey, especially when it’s your mistake. So, lesson learned, pay more attention in the future and spend less time texting between turns.
My friends at Magic often go to IHOP afterwards to continue playing, and I almost went with this week… But, I figured I am going to be up late as hell tomorrow so I should keep things a little more low key. I’ve been experimenting a lot with different kinds of wine lately, and settled into some Skyrim and a really great malbec I found at a totally dumpy liquor store of all places.
That’s about it! Another fantastic Friday in the books.
